Generals Start Season In Top 25

The first NJCAA Men’s Basketball rankings were released on Tuesday, October 29th, and saw the Generals enter the poll at #21. The Generals, coming off a 24-7 season, were the highest ranked team in Region IX.  Fellow Region IX member North Platte Community College earned a #25 ranking in the poll. The Generals open up the regular season this weekend, November  1st at the Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome for the Holiday Inn Tournament. The Generals will face University of Great Falls on Friday night at 7 pm, and the national powerhouse Snow College Badgers Saturday night at 7 pm.

“Our entire program is definitely excited about the ranking to start the year off. With so many NJCAA Division 1 programs across the country, it’s very difficult to get in the national poll, so it’s nice to get in the rankings early on. With high expectations, our team will have to understand that we will have a bulls-eye on our back from the opening day, but I do believe that this year’s group has the maturity to handle high expectations.”

Generals Participate in B.E.A.R. Reading Program

The Sheridan College athletic department participated in the Sheridan Elementary School B.E.A.R. read-a-thon at Sagebrush Elementary School. The B.E.A.R. reading program entices young students to accumulate hours reading their favorite books in order to build the necessary habits to promote literacy amongst Wyoming students.  A select number of students were awarded with the ability to read alongside their favorite Sheridan College Generals during a morning session in October.

“Anytime we can give back to the community, and support a good cause we are excited to participate”, said General Sean McCarthy. “The importance of teaching young students the joy that they can achieve in reading will help them build necessary habits to have a good academic career.”

The Generals open their regular season next Friday, November 1st, against University of Great Falls at 7:00 PM.

Alston To The Atlantic 10

Sheridan College Men’s Basketball guard, Iakeem Alston, has committed to the University of St. Bonaventure to continue his playing career.  The 6’0, 170 pound guard from Baltimore, Maryland averaged 8.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game last season for the Generals.  Alston helped lead the Generals to a 24-7 record while shooting 51% from the floor. This past season the Bonnies went 14-15, while boasting a 7-9 record in the prestigious Atlantic-10 conference.  In the 2011-2012 season, the Bonnies won the Atlantic-10 tournament and saw a lead to Florida State disappear in the final minutes of their opening round NCAA Tournament game.

“We’re very excited that Iakeem has made this decision to further his career at St. Bonaventure’s. Iakeem was recruited by Division 1 schools all across the country but ultimately, St. Bonaventure’s was the perfect fit for Iakeem. His desire to compete at a high level will be fulfilled in playing in a great league, the A-10 (5 teams from that league made it to the NCAA tournament last season), he will have a chance to have family and friends see him play as he moves back to the East Coast, and he feels really good about their staff and players. Head Coach Mark Schmidt has been extremely diligent in his recruitment of Iakeem, and that definitely helped in Iakeem’s decision process.”

Alston is the third General to commit to a NCAA Division institution this fall. The Generals will place Medicine Hat University (Canada) this Friday, October 18th in an open exhibition game at 6:00 pm. The Generals open their regular season on November 1st against University of Great Falls at 7:00 pm.

(Sheridan) – Sheridan College sophomore guard Frederic Dure has committed to continue his career next year for the Arkansas State Red Wolves.  The 6’5, 170 pound guard from Montreal, Canada averaged 10.6 points and 3.6 rebounds last year for the Generals while knocking down 30 field goals from behind the arc. Arkansas State finished last season with a 19-12 record, going 12-8 in Sun Belt action.  The Red Wolves won the West Division of the Sun-Belt before falling in the semi-finals of the Sun Belt Tournament to the eventual champions, Western Kentucky.

“We’re really happy for Fred and his decision to attend Arkansas State next year. He’s been a standout both in the classroom and on the court during his stay here at Sheridan, and we’re thrilled that he’s made this decision to continue his career at a great school at the D1 level. We’re excited to see how Fred finishes his sophomore year here at Sheridan, and fully confident that he will be a great player at Arkansas State.”

Dure joins Kaileb Rodriguez as Generals who have made their decisions here in the early period. Rodriguez has recently committed to play at University of Nevada-Reno.

Rodriguez Headed To The Mountain West

Sheridan College forward Kaileb Rodriguez will continue his career at the University of Nevada, giving them a verbal commitment this past weekend. Rodriguez enters his first season in a Generals uniform after red-shirting last year at University of California-Berkley.  The 6’9, 215 pound forward was invited this past summer to play in the Jerry Mullens Junior College Top-100 Camp in St. Louis, Missouri.  A Denver, Colorado native, Rodriguez played at Thunderidge High School. In his senior season the Grizzlies post a 20-6 record, finished as the 5th ranked team in the state of Colorado.  Rodriguez averaged 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 assists per game

Rodriguez, a freshman, will play for the Wolf Pack in the Mountain West Conference beginning in the 2014-2015 season as a red-shirt sophomore.

“We’re really excited that Kaileb has decided to commit to Nevada, and it sounds like it will be a perfect fit for Kaileb both on the floor and in the classroom. Kaileb has a high ceiling and is continually improving as a player. We’re really excited to see how he does for us this year as a General, and glad that he’ll be finishing his final 3 years at a great program in the Mountain West.”

Adeyeye Joins Generals

The Sheridan College Generals have added Joshua Adeyeye, a 6’6 220 pound forward to the 2013-2014 men’s basketball roster. Adeyeye joins the Sheridan College Generals after having a successful freshman season at Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland.  Josh averaged 15 points, 6.1 rebounds for the Shock this past season. Originally from Fayetville, North Carolina, Josh prepped at Coppin Academy in Baltimore, Maryland, where he averaged 32 points and 10 rebounds per game.  The Baltimore Sun honored Josh during his senior season, naming him the Player of the Week

“We’re really excited to get a player of Josh’s caliber and maturity to round out our recruiting for this 2013-14 class,” commented Coach Smiley.  “Josh had a stellar high school career, and after being injured in 2011-12, had a great freshman year last year at Washington Adventist University. Josh is a really well-rounded player, that can play both forward positions and even some guard if needed. He’s a strong athlete that can stretch the floor with his shooting ability, and also create with the dribble. He should be a terrific addition to our team, and we’re expecting him to have a great sophomore campaign this year”
