Sheridan College Head Men's Basketball coach Steve Smiley announced today the signing of South Dakota native Tate Stensgaard to a national letter of intent.Stensgaard is a 6'8", 190-pound forward/center from Stevens High School in Rapid City, SD. At Stevens, Tate averaged 13.8ppg and 6.8rpg, leading his team in both categories. His best game this past year came against Sturgis HS when Tate went off for 29 points and 14 rebounds. Stensgaard's honors include being selected second team all Greater Dakota Conference in 2011 as well as being selected to play in the 3rd Annual Northern Hills Senior All-Star Basketball Game. He wa also named KOTA News' Athlete of the Week during the 2011 season.
Coach Smiley had this to say about Tate: "We're really excited to sign Tate to a National Letter of Intent to start building our class around him. We felt that Tate was one of the most intriguing prospects in our immediate region, with his size and athleticism and high skill level. We see Tate eventually playing a power forward position for us. He's very skilled from the perimeter, can hit the open jump shot, and also is effective inside with his footwork and touch around the rim. Tate's biggest challenge early on will be to develop his physical strength and put on more mass, but we're confident that he can be a contributor to our team in the near future."
