Don Meyer To Visit Sheridan

(Sheridan) – The Sheridan College Men’s basketball team is excited to announce that NCAA All-Time win leader & ESPY award winning Coach Don Meyer will be hosting several events in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Coach Don Meyer is a renowned speaker, hosting leadership seminars and speaking for national organizations such as New York Life. Coach Meyer’s life was changed in 2008 when a near fatal car accident discovered that he had carcinoid cancer. Despite having his leg amputated, Meyer returned to the sideline that winter for Northern State University where he set the All-Time NCAA Win’s record with 923 victories. ESPN awarded Meyer with the Jimmy Valvano Perseverance award that summer at the ESPY’s.  Later that year ESPN’s Buster Olney released the New York Times Bestseller How Lucky You Can Be, chronicling Coach Meyer’s tale.

Coach Don Meyer will be on Sheridan College campus, Monday, October 15^th, 2012 at 6:30 pm in the CTEL where he will cover various topics from leadership, to goal setting.  On Tuesday, October 16^th, 2012 at 7:30 am at the Holiday Inn, Coach Don Meyer will speak for the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. Finally, on Tuesday, October 16^th, 2012 at 6:30 pm, location TBA, Coach Meyer would like to invite out all area coaches to partake in a Coaches Roundtable to discuss various coaching topics and strategies.

Former Generals Sign Professional Contracts

(Sheridan) – Former Sheridan College standouts Antoine Proctor and JR Cadot have signed professional contracts to play in the top professional basketball league in Slovakia. Proctor has signed with the MBK Handlova basketball club, and Cadot has signed with BK Spu Nitra. 

Cadot signs his first professional contract after finishing his collegiate career at TCU where averaged 11.4 points on 50% shooting and 7 rebounds a game in his senior season. He was also named to the All-Mountain West Third Team.

Proctor completed his career at Montana State University-Billings where he averaged 18.7 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game while being named the GNAC Newcomer of the Year, and earning a First Team All-Conference selection and First Team All-Region selection.

Proctor & Cadot competed for the Generals during the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons.  Both earned All-Region selections for the Generals while compiling a 54-13 record.

California Native Rounds Out Generals Recruiting Class

(Sheridan) – The Sheridan College Generals have rounded out their 2012 recruiting class with the signing of Ontario, California native Darren Smith. Smith, a 6’7” 205-lb forward comes to the Generals after playing last year at La Jolla Prep School in La Jolla, California. Smith also played for the highly touted Dream Vision AAU Team from Los Angeles, California, playing alongside 3 top-100 prospects.

"We're really excited to finalize our class with the signing of Darren. We've been following Darren for a long time and happy that he will be a General. Coach Magrino did a tremendous job staying in contact with Darren throughout the year so we were in position to recruit him this late in the process. Darren is an explosive, dynamic athlete that can play multiple positions for us next year. He has a chance to be a very high level player as he continues to develop, and we're excited to start working with him this fall."

The Generals welcome nine new faces to the roster this season to join alongside five returners from the 2011-2012 Generals squad that went 25-7, finishing 2^nd place in North Region IX.

Moore signs to play with Crusaders

(Sheridan) – Sheridan Generals freshman guard Grayson Moore, 6’5” Logan, UT, has signed a letter of intent to continue his career with the University of Northwest Nazarene Crusaders.  Moore averaged 2.3 points per game last season for the Generals, while shooting 52% from the field and averaging 1.2 rebounds per contest. 

Coach Smiley commented on Grayson’s signing: "We're thrilled that Grayson will have the opportunity to play for a great coaching staff at Northwest Nazarene. Coach Daniels and Coach Mejeur are in the process of building up the program, and we're really excited that Grayson will be part of that process. The GNAC is one of the top D2 programs in the nation, and we're excited to see how Grayson acclimates!"

“I'm proud to say that I have been able to be a part of the Sheridan College basketball team,” said Moore.  “They have a great tradition, of not only winning, but being a good team off the court as well. Coach Smiley and Coach Magrino helped me sharpen my skills, as well as showed me how to play the game at a higher level. I am thankful for the opportunity to play at Sheridan.  I'm very excited about moving on to play at NNU. It's a school that's up and coming with the basketball program, and I'm proud to be a part of that. Coach Daniels is doing a good job with the team. And I'm excited to continue my basketball career there as a Crusader.”

Northwest Nazarene University plays in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference, home to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Champions Western Washington University.  The Crusaders finished last season with a 12-14 record, going 6-12 in the GNAC. Grayson in the 8^th General moving on this season joining Lamont Prosser (Portland State University), Jermaine Lippert (University of Detroit), Khion Sankey (Lipscomb University), Wayne Bradford (Weber State University), Robert Heyer (University of Texas Permian-Basin), Rolands Narkis (Bellevue University), R.J. Leverette (University of Missouri-Southern).

Generals Showcase Their Talent This Summer

(Sheridan) – All five returning players for the Sheridan College Generals participated in showcase events this summer across the nation. Four returning sophomores participated in the Jerry Mullens Junior College Showcase in St. Louis Missouri on July 14^th.  Brandon Pines (6’8”, F/C, Columbia, MD), Ron Mvouika (6’4”, G, Paris, France), Victor Bermudez (6’3”, G, North Las Vegas, NV), and Isaac Oeltjen (7’1”, C, Red Wing, MN) all received invitations to play in one of the largest junior college events in the nation.  The four Generals showcased their talents in front of several hundred four-year college coaches.

The closing junior college event of the summer was the All-American JUCO Showcase located in Las Vegas, Nevada. Representing Sheridan College at this event was Victor Bermudez and Red-shirt Freshman Tate Stensgaard (6’7”, F, Rapid City, SD).  All five returning Generals look to build on their success from last season when the Generals posted a 25-7 record, tying them for 2^nd place in North Region IX.

Built Sankey tough

Whether it's in a foxhole, heading down a dark alley or even on a basketball court, toughness is the golden fleece of qualities. Coaches preach it, everyone admires it and, of course, poseurs attempt to fake it. Now being tough has multiple dimensions -- tenacity, fearlessness and a megadose of those familiar Tom Petty lyrics "...no I won't back down..." -- yet all can agree that toughness could simply be defined by inserting a photo of Khion Sankey next to the word in the dictionary.

Now the 6-foot-5 Sankey is headed to Nashville (Tenn.) but, no, he hasn't donned a big hat and taken up country-and-western crooning. It's because he is a new member of the Lipscomb University Bisons, part of the Atlantic Sun Conference and a program headed by Scott Sanderson, son of legendary Alabama Coach Wimp Sanderson.
According to Sankey, he'll be playing all over the court at Lipscomb. That will be nothing new.
Looking back, Sankey enjoyed a senior season as the Newark Memorial High on-court spiritual leader, a year in which he averaged 14.3 points, eight rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.8 steals a game for a 30-5 Cougar squad that won a northern California championship but then lost 63-56 in the state title game to Westchester. The latter enjoyed six eventual D-I players on its roster and Sankey worked them over to the tune of 25 points (14 in the fourth quarter) and 10 rebounds.
Recruiting nibbles appeared from some D-I colleges but no actual offers were forthcoming. College coaches were enamored but also unsure of what position the 6-foot-5 Sankey could play at the next level.
So he took his game and immense presence to Coach Steve Smiley and Sheridan College in Wyoming and in two seasons, the Generals won 49 games. As a sophomore, Sankey averaged 7.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals per contest, boosting those figures to 15.5 points, 8.5 boards and 4.0 assists during Sheridan's run in the playoffs.
What was it like to go from California to a town of 18,000?
"I liked it" Sankey said. "It's a small town but the people were so nice, like a family." He even enjoyed the rodeos.
One aspect that he benefited from is being away from home.
"I grew up a lot living on my own, having to go grocery shopping and managing money, even a little cooking."
Sankey's planning to major in psychology.
Besides Lipscomb, the Atlantic Sun Conference consists of East Tennessee State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville, Northern Kentucky, Stetson, Kennesaw State, Mercer, North Florida and South Carolina Upstate.
The university has a strong focus on academics and seven of Lipscomb men's basketball student-athletes were recently honored for their academic achievements.
Sankey wished to thank his family -- Mom, Dad, sisters, brothers and family members - as well as all the coaches who coached him and the players who helped him become the player he is now.

• Raymond Young, who coached one of Sankey's club teams offered, "Khion is a warrior and a leader with an amazing will to win. He is one of the most competitive kids I've ever coached, a do-it-all utility guy who can play the one through five spots and guard the one through five spots."
• Willy Clark of the Bay Area Wildcats coached and worked with Sankey since elementary school and praises him effusively: "Khion is all about winning and he does whatever it takes to win. He plays hard and with a lot of passion. That pushes other guys and it's how a team overachievers. He'll give you whatever you want -- passing, scoring, rebounding, defense. He's long, anticipates well and really pesters people."
• Newark Memorial Coach Craig Ashmore said, "Khion is a tremendous kid who wants to be part of something bigger than himself. That is what we're based around and it really signifies what he is about. He is just a winner with a tremendous work ethic and pride. Khion is a leader by example and someone who will never back down to anything."
• Sheridan College Coach Steve Smiley explained, "we recruited Khion as a power forward out of high school. We got in a jam with injuries this season and he ended up leading us in assists. He makes good decisions and doesn't turn the ball over. Khion is smart enough to understand different roles and he doesn't need to score to be happy. He is also a phenomenal defender, All-Region two years in a row for us. People gravitate to him and he helps the team ulture out everywhere he goes."

Montana Guard Choses Generals

Tell Shannon, a 6’2” guard from Broadus, Montana has committed to play for the Sheridan College Generals next season. An All-State Montana selection, Shannon played for Broadus High School this past season where he led the Hawks in scoring, rebounding, assists, and blocked shots. Tell averaged 12.3 points and 9.4 rebounds a game for the Hawks and was also selected to play in the Billings All-Star Class B Classic.  A standout on the football field and on the track, Tell was selected All-Conference in football and track.

Coach Smiley had this to say about Tell: “Tell is another nice piece to this year’s recruiting class. We really like his toughness, how hard he plays, and his ability to score from the perimeter. We see Tell mainly playing the shooting guard position, but could fill into our other guards spot as well if needed. He has a scorer’s mentality and the ability to shoot from deep range. He’ll be an excellent addition to our team.”

Canadian Sharp-Shooter Frédéric Duré Choses Generals

Canadian stand-out guard Frédéric Duré has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Sheridan College Generals, beginning in the 2012-2013 season. Duré played for Indiens d’Ahuntsic out of Quebec, Canada, where he led his team to a 15-4 record, winning the State championship for the first time in school history. Dure was named the player of the game, where he led all scorers in the championship game with 28 points; he also pulled down 5 rebounds and dished out 3 assists in the contest.  Ahuntsic went on to lose in the semi-finals of the Canadian Nationals, where Duré led his team in scoring at 20 points per game. Duré was also named the CCAA Rookie of the Year.

The 6’5”, 185 pound guard was selected to the Quebec All-Star team after averaging 18.1 points and 3.2 assists while shooting 42% from 3-point range.  Coach Smiley had this to say about Fred: "Fred is a great addition to our team for next year as he addresses several needs with his ability to shoot, and with his size and skill level, he can realistically play all three guard and wing positions. Fred is an elite shooter that will be a constant threat for our offense next year. We absolutely love Fred's versatility, length, and his 6'5" frame. He should have a great career for us at Sheridan and also at the NCAA level."

Generals Sign Wyoming Big Man Millay

Taylor Millay, a 6’7”, 250 pound forward from Casper, Wyoming has committed to play for Sheridan College next season.  Taylor attended Glenrock High School where he played for Coach Rich Millay, and garnered an All-Conference selection this past season, as well as being invited to play for the Wyoming All-Stars.  Taylor averaged 13.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 2 blocks a game this past season.  Taylor played AAU for Tru Playaz and Coach Tree Adams.  A football standout as well, Taylor earned a 2011 All-Conference selection.  In the classroom Taylor has been a member of the Honor Roll every year, boasting a 3.4 GPA.

“We’re really excited to get Taylor on board with us for next year,” commented Coach Smiley.  “Taylor had a really good high school career, finishing with a double-double average this year at Glenrock and being selected to play in the Wyoming-Montana All Star game in June. Taylor has the potential to be a really good post player at our level. He has great size & strength, and also a nice touch around the rim. If he continues to develop, he could have a great collegiate career. He’s a nice addition to our front line and we’re excited to get working with him in the near future.”
